Have you ever felt that all the effort you have been putting into developing yourself is not getting results? As a college speaker, people tell me all the time about their discouragement in feeling like efforts to improve areas of their lives are wasted.
Let me introduce you to the Moso bamboo plant. It is native to some of the warmer parts of China. It is one of the most incredible plants on the earth. Here is why:
The seed is put into the ground. We see nothing happen.
Nothing comes out of the ground.
Nothing is happening still!
A small sprout pops out of the ground! Finally something is happening.
And then, over the next six weeks, this sprout will shoot up at a rate of two to three feet per day until it is nearly 100 feet tall!
The plant goes from nothing in five years to 100 feet of growth in six weeks.
But what was really happening?
The reality is that the seed that was planted five years ago immediately began to spread roots. Then it continued to spread miles and miles of roots in order to support its ultimate growth up in the fifth year.
This is exactly how personal development works. We need to first do things that build our roots—seemingly nothing is happening. This can be discouraging is usually where most people quit. But the people that continue to push through continue to build roots and ultimately experience intense growth.
We see this phenomenon in pop culture all the time. Musicians usually seem to suddenly become famous, but in reality, the person had been busting his or her hump for many many years prior to an exploding career.
So, looking at your own path, what is one goal that you have been discouraged by or even gave up because it seemed fruitless. We must continue to build our roots and persist absolutely. Just keep at it and eventually, with the right plan, you will achieve whatever it is you want.
What is one goal that you want to achieve at all costs? Please share below in the comments section!
